On Tuesday night, there was a shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia. Seven people were killed, and several more were hurt. The shooter is dead, according to local media, which quoted the city’s police department.
The City Police of Chesapeake were quoted in an early Wednesday morning tweet that confirmed the deaths. Leo Kosinski, who works as a public information officer, told Reuters that in the first update, police said they thought fewer than 10 people had died.
So far, the police haven’t said much about the suspected shooter, but several news outlets have said that he worked at the store as a manager. Kosinski said that the police didn’t know whether or not the shooter worked for Walmart.
Around 10:12 p.m. on Tuesday, police were called to a report of a shooting (8:42 a.m. Wednesday, Indian Time). The spokesman said that when police went into the Walmart on Sam’s Circle, they found “multiple deaths and multiple injuries.”
He also said that the police didn’t fire any shots and didn’t know if the shooter was an employee or a customer. Kosinski said that it is not clear if the shooter also killed himself.

Reuters reported that Walmart said in a statement early Wednesday morning that it was “shocked” by what happened at its Chesapeake store and was working closely with law enforcement.
In another report, Wavy-tv, which is based in Virginia, said that in addition to the people who were found dead or hurt inside the store, one person was also found dead outside the front door. A hospital spokeswoman said that five of the injured people were taken to the nearby Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
According to a Wavy-TV report, the public has been told to stay away from the area because police are still going through the building.
Over 40 emergency vehicles were still parked outside, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Virginia Beach Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) have reached out to help with the investigation.

The City of Chesapeake said on Twitter that a place for bringing families back together has been set up at the Chesapeake Conference Center.
“Chesapeake police confirm that there is an active shooter situation at the Walmart on Sam’s Circle and that people have died.” The person who fired the shot has died. Only here will you find official news. Please give them room to do their jobs. Our first responders are well-trained and ready to help.
“A place for bringing families back together has been set up at the Chesapeake Conference Center” (700 Conference Center Drive). “This site is only for close family members or people who can be reached in an emergency and may have been in the building,” it said.
Near the scene, in the parking lot at Joshua Way and Sam’s Circle, the city said a place for the media to wait has been set up.
“This response has only been going on for a few hours, so we don’t have all the answers yet.” Chesapeake police are still looking into what happened at Walmart on Sam’s Circle when a shooter was on the loose. “We do know that there are multiple deaths and injuries, and we know for sure that the shooter is dead,” it said.
