Mexico’s president said on Wednesday that his government will think about Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s request to be sent back to Mexico to serve out the rest of his sentence. Guzman is currently in prison for being a drug lord.
Guzman, who is 64 years old, was given a life sentence in the United States for a drug plot that caused death and chaos for more than 20 years.
A Mexican lawyer named José Refugio Rodriguez said that Guzman has been living in bad conditions in prison since he was found guilty in 2019. Rodriguez told local news outlets that Guzman hasn’t gotten enough sun, visitors, good food, or medical care.
On its Twitter account, the Mexican Embassy in Washington said that it had received an email about the issue from Rodriguez and had sent it to Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said, “We’ll look at it again,” and he added, “When it comes to human rights, you always have to keep the door open.”
The U.S. and Mexico have a prison transfer agreement that lets people who have been convicted in one country finish their sentences in their home country. But because of Guzman’s crimes, his sentence, and the risks he is said to still pose, many people don’t think the agreement would apply to him.
