Hal Matthew “Matt” Hanenkrath, age 40, of Ayersville, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital.
He was born on August 4, 1982, in Defiance, Ohio, to Hal and Lori (Duerk) Hanenkrath. Matt graduated from Ayersville High School in 2001, where he participated in football and baseball. He married Ashley (Stork) Hanenkrath on April 11, 2009, and she is still alive.

Matt Hanenkrath Obituary: On Sunday, July 2, 2023, visitation will occur in the Defiance Elementary School gym, 400 Carter Road, from noon to 8:00 p.m. On Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Defiance Elementary School, a funeral service will be placed at 11:00 am to honor his life. Additional visiting will be from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Rev. Kurt Mews will lead the service. The service will be followed by burial at Ayersville Cemetery.
The Defiance County Sheriff’s Office paid tribute to Matt Hanenkrath on Facebook, writing-
“No words can even begin to describe our devastating loss. Rest easy Matt, we have it from here..”

Who is Matt Hanenkrath?
Matt belonged to St. John Lutheran Church. He has diligently performed the roles of Assistant Chief and Fire Chief for the Highland Township and South Richland volunteer fire departments. He was named the 911 Communications Center Director for Defiance County in 2016. He was committed to supporting others and giving back to his neighborhood.
He enjoyed spending time in Ayersville coaching girls’ softball for his daughter’s teams and working as an assistant football coach. He was the president of the Ayersville Board of Education. Matt enjoyed his time with the children as a devoted and thoughtful husband, father, son and brother.
He was a die-hard supporter of the Cleveland Indians, Green Bay Packers, and Michigan Wolverines. His friends, coworkers, and family will all miss him dearly. Haleigh, Brynn, and Bentley Hanenkrath, as well as his mother Lori Hanenkrath of Ayersville, two brothers, Joshua Hanenkrath of Ayersville and Kurt (Jayde) Hanenkrath of Defiance, and seven nieces and nephews, survive Matt.
His father, Hal Hanenkrath, died before him. During this trying moment, his wife, Ashley, would like to express her profound gratitude to the emergency personnel, healthcare professionals, and close friends.
