Joseph DiSalvo, the Village Justice, passed away at the age of 71 on Saturday, July 1, 2023, according to Hastings Gov. He spent 35 years working for the village, starting as the acting justice from 1988 to 2004, then as the judge from 2004 until his recent retirement.

Joe was a Westchester County lawyer by day. In Bronxville, New York, he served as managing partner of Nobile, Magarian & DiSalvo, LLP. After being admitted to the New York State Bar in 1977, he began working for the firm in 1979. He concentrated on real estate, land use, commercial disputes, wills, trusts, and estates, and many grateful Hastings people were his customers.

But Joe was our Village Judge at night. He dealt with everything, from traffic infractions to more serious crimes, which are luckily uncommon in our neighborhood. As Joe would say, he always administered justice in a “firm but fair manner.” He was considerate, smart, empathetic, and courteous. He had a strong conviction in the necessity of the law. We were fortunate to have him fill this crucial function in our village.

Joe served as our neighborhood’s civic leader and anchor for almost fifty years. He held various leadership positions at St. Matthew/Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Hastings, served as a Trustee and Chair at St. John’s Riverside Hospital, was a Director for The Sharing Community, a Yonkers homeless shelter and soup kitchen, a Director for Westchester Residential Opportunities, a fair housing organization, and more. He also played with The Westchester Chordsmen, a barbershop choir last seen in the Village in 2021 during the year-end holidays.

Joe and his wife Joanne moved to our Village in 1979, and together they raised their four children, Julia, Andrew, Katie, and Patrick. Joe had a genuine passion for our Village. Eight grandchildren, including Joseph, Grace, and Timmy Drake, who reside in Hastings, were born to him and his wife, Joanne.
