He was the Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) from 1994 to 1997, during which time he was instrumental in the Northern Ireland peace process and the European Union’s formation. In addition, he was the first Irish leader to address a joint session of the US Congress in 1996.

Funeral services for Bruton will be held on Friday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Dunboyne, according to Cunningham’s Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements. Details about the burial are pending.

The family and the Fine Gael party are working together to plan a service that reflects Bruton’s remarkable life and legacy. They ask that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Irish Cancer Society or the Irish Heart Foundation.
