The announcement was delivered in the most lighthearted manner imaginable, but, really—perhaps it’s time the actor put down the claws.

A huge liar, Hugh Jackman. This Thursday, the actor revealed that he would be donning the adamantium claws once more for Deadpool 3, despite insisting for literally years that he would never portray Wolverine again following 2017’s Logan. Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, virtually sang him a ballad as the crowd cheered. Although it’s cool, Jackman, this has to be the final fakeout.
A little background: Jackman has been Wolverine since the 2000 film X-Men. Even though some of the movies aren’t great, his performance is almost unanimously praised when it comes to pairings between characters and the people who play them. After Logan—a film in which the lead character passed away, mind you—it was assumed that Jackman’s tenure as Wolvy ended. Reynolds himself would ponder whether he would return for years, nevertheless. Consistently declining, Jackman Finally, on Wednesday, he acknowledged. “Yeah, certainly, Ryan,” was the response. However, you get the idea.
Reynolds then shared another video stating that Logan is still alive in Deadpool 3 because Logan takes place in the year 2029, which is in the future. While describing the fantastic action sequences, he and Jackman were overshadowed by the sounds of Wham”Wake !’s Me Up Before You Go-Go.” (Zing!) It was enjoyable and fan-pleasing!

Fakeouts are fun and all, but I mean this sincerely: just let Jackman put down the claws. Fans, Hugh Jackman likely, and everyone else finds it tiring to keep bringing him out of retirement. Wolverine should at least be rebooted if we must continue to work on projects with him. The X-Men were owned by Fox, which Disney recently acquired, so this seems nearly inevitable. Look at the Fantastic Four project that Marvel Studios is working on. (Although, you know, reboots aren’t always great.)
Daniel Radcliffe is already available and would make the ideal Jackman substitute. Every few years, there are rumors that he might take over the position; he has denied them as recently as March, but that doesn’t make him any less ideal. He has the acting and mutton (possibly) chops, and if the Weird: The Al Yankovic Story trailers are any indicator, he also has the necessary chest hair. Jackman must make a cameo appearance in Deadpool 3. Then, though, Marvel, please, let Radcliffe begin to Radsnikt.
