Late Wednesday night, a fake 911 call led three police officers to a house in Bristol, Connecticut, where they were shot and killed. A fourth officer was seriously hurt.
Officials say that just before 10:30 p.m., a 911 call came in from a home on Redstone Hill Road about a fight between two siblings.
“When the police arrived, they found the suspect right outside 310 Redstone Hill Road. Shots were fired, and one officer on the scene was killed. Two other officers were taken to hospitals in the area. “A second officer was found dead, and a third officer was seriously hurt,” said Sgt. Christine Jeltema of the Connecticut State Police.
Officer Alex Hamzy, who was 34 years old, died at the scene. Sgt. Dustin Demonte, who was 35 years old, was taken to Bristol Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officer Alec Iurato, who is 26 years old, was shot and badly hurt. He had surgery and is now getting better.
“From what we know so far,” police said, “it looks like the 911 call was made on purpose to get the police to the scene.” ABC was told by sources that the gunman may have made a fake 911 call from the house and then waited for the police with an AR-15-style rifle.
Nicholas Brutcher, who was 35 years old, was shot, and police said he was dead at the scene. Nathan Brutcher, the suspect’s 32-year-old brother, was also shot and taken to a hospital to get help.
“I can’t put into words how sad and upset I am to be here with you this morning,” Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould said. “We lost two great Bristol police officers because of this senseless violence, and a third was seriously hurt.”
Gould said that Demonte’s wife and two children (plus one on the way) will miss him. Demonte had worked for the department since 2011.
Hamzy was hired in 2014 and was born and raised in Bristol. His wife, parents, and siblings will miss him. Iurato was hired by the department in 2018 and is in charge of patrol.
“The men and women of the Bristol Police Department are lucky and proud to protect and serve the people of Bristol on the front lines, which is what these heroes did last night. When they were asked to do something, they did it right away. Before that, they did the same thing every night, and all of our officers will continue to do the same thing every day “Gould said.
Shortly after the shooting, the two dead officers were taken from Bristol Hospital to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington in a procession.
“Our big small town is Bristol. It is also called the City of All Hearts. Our hearts are broken today. “We are all very sad about what happened to these brave officers, their families and friends, and all of our law enforcement officers,” said Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano.
Governor Ned Lamont of Connecticut said that flags in the state should be flown at half-staff to honor the officers. Lamont said, “This is a senseless tragedy, and my prayers go out to their families, friends, and fellow officers.”
About 20 miles to the southwest of Hartford is the city of Bristol.
