Roland is known as the face of the “10 O’clock News” and as the beloved anchor of FOX 5’s 10 p.m. newscast for nearly 30 years, the news outlet said. FOX 5 says he was known for his “frank delivery” and his care for New Yorkers living through dangerous times in the city in the 1970s.
In the 1960s, Roland got his start at NBC News in Los Angeles. In 1966, he got his first job. In 1969, the enthusiastic broadcaster joined Metromedia, which became FOX 5. He stayed there until he retired in 2004.
At the beginning of his career, Roland was the “10 O’clock News” weekend host and the “politics reporter” during the week. FOX 5 says that he became the nighttime anchor for the show in 1979.
During his decades-long work, Roland wrote about many important events. He covered the killing of Robert F. Kennedy and the attacks on September 11, 2001, among many other important events over the years.
“Sitting next to John was always a learning lesson,” Roland’s former co-anchor, Rosanna Scotto, told FOX 5. “He took pride in his writing and his down-to-earth communicating. It was never more evident than anchoring next to him during the 9/11 attacks.”
The outlet says that Roland’s wife, Zayda, and his extended family will continue without him. The reason for his death is not known yet.
