Keanu Reeves, a Hollywood celebrity, has dropped out of Hulu’s series adaption of “The Devil in the White City.”
According to Variety, the actor has withdrawn from the movie, which is executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and his regular collaborator, filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
The show, which would have been Reeves’ first significant role on American television, is based on Erik Larson’s 2003 book of the same name.
The reason for Reeves’ departure has not been revealed. The “Matrix Resurrections” star was set to play one of the series’ two leads, Daniel H. Burnham.
The actual story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were permanently entwined by the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, is told in “The Devil in the White City.”
“It follows Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect on a mission to make his mark on the world, and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical ‘Murder Castle’ on fair grouradhikands – a palace built to seduce, torture, and mutilate young women.” According to the official synopsis, “the story takes the audience on a journey of murder, passion, and mystery in the gilded period.”

The big-budget project has been in the works since DiCaprio purchased the film rights to the book in 2010 and previously set it up as a feature film at Paramount with Scorsese directing.
Hulu announced in 2019 that it was developing a series based on the novel. Reeves joined the project formally in August of this year.
Sam Shaw will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the project, which is now a co-production between Paramount Television Studios and Disney’s ABC Signature.
