Early Life and Background

Jasmine Paolini was born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, a small village in Tuscany, Italy, on January 4, 1996. She is the daughter of Italian Ugo Paolini and Polish-Ghanaian Jacqueline Gardiner. William, her younger brother, is also a tennis player.

Paolini began playing tennis when she was five years old, following in the footsteps of her uncle, who was a tennis coach. She idolized Serena Williams and Roger Federer as a child and aspired to be a professional tennis player.

Paolini went to a local school in her hometown and excelled in both academics and sports. In 2014, she graduated from high school and decided to pursue a full-time tennis career.

She relocated to Rome to train at the National Training Center of the Italian Tennis Federation. She also enrolled in and finished an online university course in sports management.

Career and Achievements

Since 2012, Paolini has played mostly on the ITF Circuit, the lower level of women’s tennis. She won her first ITF title in 2013 and peaked at No. 145 in 2017. She lost in qualifying at the 2017 French Open in her Grand Slam debut.

She lost in the first round of doubles alongside Nastassja Burnett at the 2017 Italian Open after receiving a wildcard. Paolini won her first top-20 match over Daria Kasatkina at the Prague Open in 2018. She made her first WTA semifinal at the Bol Open and qualified for her first Grand Slam main event at the US Open.

Her first top 100 finish was No. 93 in the world. Paolini improved in 2019 and 2020, earning two more WTA semifinals at the Palermo Open and Tashkent Open and qualifying for all four Grand Slam main events.

She won two singles matches against Romania and Spain on her Fed Cup debut for Italy. She achieved a career-high No. 87 in June 2020.

Paolini won her first WTA victory at the Slovenia Open in 2021, defeating Alison Riske in the final. She won her first WTA doubles title alongside Liudmila Samsonova at the same event.

She lost to Danielle Collins in another WTA final at the Hamburg European Open. She reached the third round of two WTA 1000 events, the Madrid Open and the Indian Wells Open, and defeated Aryna Sabalenka in her maiden top-10 triumph. She reached a career-high No. 44 in September 2021.
