The prosecutor on the case says the man accused of killing two teenage girls in Indiana may not have acted alone. In Delphi, Indiana, on February 13, 2017, Richard Allen, 50, was charged with the murders of Liberty “Libby” German, 14, and Abigail “Abby” Williams, 13.
After the girls failed to return from a hike on a nearby trail, their parents reported them missing. Officials say that their bodies were found near a creek the next day, on February 14. Their causes of death are still classified. At a hearing for the suspect on Tuesday, prosecutor Nicholas McLeland told the judge, “We Believe Richard Allen Is Not The Only Actor Involved In This,” according to WTHR-TV.
According to the station, this is why McLeland wants the judge to keep court records secret. McLeland, as reported by ABC News, argued that investigators are still hearing new information about the case. In addition to Libby’s grandmother Becky Patty’s letter, he submitted an online petition with 40,000 signatures in support of keeping the affidavit sealed.
McLeland was quoted in WTH as saying that keeping the documents secret was in the best interests of everyone involved. Wxin-tv reports that Allen’s lawyers are trying to get the documents released to the public.
Defense attorney Andrew Baldwin told the outlet that once the file is opened, there will be more questions than answers in the probable cause affidavit. He then went on to say, “That’s how confident we are in our client.” That’s how sure we are that the evidence presented, or at least the information presented in the probable cause affidavit, leaves us with nothing to worry about.
Baldwin also said that the documents don’t show any evidence that another suspect might have been involved in the alleged murders, which goes against what the prosecutors say. “If you read the probable cause affidavit, it does not mention anything about any other person,” Baldwin told the station. “We didn’t know that.
When asked for comment, Baldwin did not immediately respond. According to ABC News, Allen has entered a not guilty plea in the murder cases. On February 17, he will be back in court for further proceedings.
