You don’t have to pick up a paintbrush to make a painting that looks like it belongs in a museum. All you have to do to make a picture with the AI tool DALL-E is type in the picture you want to make. Now that DALL-E is finally open to the public, we’ll show you how to use it to make free AI art.
This tool is great for both new artists and experienced ones. For instance, it can help you come up with ideas for paintings, and you can then change the images you make until they look just right. All you have to do is type a few words instead of using a stylus or paintbrush.
Before we start, you should know that DALL-E is just one of many free tools for artists that are available online. The Getty Museum’s library also has 325 free art books. Here’s how to use just a few words to make digital art.
This Tool Just Became Public
DALL-E was made by a Silicon Valley company called OpenAI. This company gave the beta to a small group of artists, journalists, and other experts who were invited only. Before professionals could use this tool, they had to sign up for a waitlist.
All of that changed when OpenAI told the public that DALL-E was going public. You can make pictures based on what you say and change them if they don’t match what you had in mind. Even the same drawing can be made in many different ways with DALL-E.
On the front page, you’ll find examples of images that are meant to spark your imagination. Under these pictures are the words that made them, such as “a chair in the shape of an avocado” or “an American football player painted in a van Gogh-like style.”
You might want to know more before you let out your inner artist. So, here’s how it works and what we found when we gave it a try.
How To Make Free Art With AI
To get started, you have to type in your email address, full name, and phone number. You can’t use a landline or an app like TextNow to get a backup number. If you didn’t know, you can save money on your monthly phone bill by using these four apps.
After signing up, you can start making money. It is simple to use. Just think of an image you’d like to see and type its name into the search bar. Click Generate then.
You can do anything. You can type in anything that interests you, like landscapes, buildings, animals, people, and more. Then DALL-E will try as hard as it can to make that picture.
You can also upload your own photos and then use DALL-many E’s features to change them. Just don’t use people who are well-known. Also, you shouldn’t post pictures of people who haven’t given you permission to do so.
What Happened When We Tried To Make Free AI Art
To use this program well, you need to be detailed. Explain what’s going on in the picture to make it look as much like what you saw as possible. I wanted a colorful painting of a robot news anchor, for instance.
I didn’t want it to be true, though. I wanted it to look like something you’d find in a modern art museum. So I added the word “Impressionist” so that the brush strokes would be rough and the colors would be bright and strong.
As you can see below, the phrase “an Impressionist oil painting of a robot news anchor” made me think of four clear images:
If I wanted to, I could click on any of these pictures to be able to change them. When I click on the second picture, for example, I get a few new options: Edit, Variations, and Share.
Let’s say I don’t want to change it, but I like that image and want more like it. When I choose Variations, I get four images that are the same:
But you can do more than just draw robots with this tool. We all love Abby, Kim’s golden retriever, a lot here at the Komando HQ. Here are the three most important things Kim does to keep her dog happy and healthy.
I wondered, “What if Abby turned out to be like her mother?” So, I typed this into DALL-E: “A news-reporting golden retriever sharing the news at a high-tech news desk, digital art.”
What I got was:
Isn’t it cute? The one I like best is this one. It makes her look like an intrepid reporter:
