A Brooklyn Boy Who Became a Hollywood Star
Tony Ganios was born and reared in Brooklyn, New York, where he discovered his interest for acting and sports. He made his cinematic debut in 1979 with the cult classic The Wanderers, a drama about a gang of Italian-American teens in the Bronx during the 1960s.
He next appeared in the 1981 comedy Continental Divide, alongside John Belushi, before securing his breakout role in Porky’s later that year. Porky’s was a bawdy and amusing film about a bunch of high school pals who engage in different mishaps involving sex, pranks, and revenge.
Ganios portrayed Meat, a strong and well-endowed student who frequently became the subject of jokes and scams. He repeated his role in two sequels, Porky’s II: The Next Day (1983) and Porky’s Revenge (1985), both of which were box office successes.
Ganios has appeared in several films, including Die Hard 2 (1990), Ring of the Musketeers (1992), and Rising Sun (1993), his final film appearance. He also performed voice work in video games and documentaries.
A Loving Partner Who Faced a Sudden Tragedy
Ganios was in a relationship with Amanda Serrano-Ganios, a marketing manager, for more than nine years. They met online and shared a love of movies and animals. They intended to marry shortly, but fate had other plans.
Ganios, according to Amanda, had been sick for several days but kept it a secret from her. When he eventually told her, he was transported to a hospital in New York and diagnosed with a severe spinal cord infection.
On Saturday, February 17, 2024, he underwent emergency surgery, but the following day, while being taken to dialysis, he died of cardiac arrest. He couldn’t be resurrected and was declared dead. Amanda posted the tragic news on her social media account, along with a photo of Ganios from Porky’s days.
She wrote: “The last words we said to each other were ‘I love you.’ Love is an understatement. You are everything to me. My heart, my soul, and my best friend. #I love you #tonyganios”
