Ryan On Thursday, June 29, 2023, a farming accident took the life of Jon Meert, a devoted family man, spouse, son, educator, coach, and friend. Hank Meert, the son of Tom and Marty (Bumgart) Meert, was born on August 15, 1976, in Kalamazoo.

Ryan earned his Master of Arts from Western Michigan University after graduating from Plainwell High School in 1995. He taught middle school and coached wrestling for Plainwell Public Schools for almost 20 years.

After a hard day of farming with his family on Meert Farms, Ryan felt most fulfilled. Besides owning and operating Meert Gauthier Concrete in the winter, Ryan also handled snowploughing. As a devoted father and husband, Ryan delighted in attending his kids’ sporting and dance tournaments to cheer them on.

Camping, Disney, and Cedar Point vacations were some of his favourites. Ryan was a selfless public servant who loved and was loved by everyone he encountered. He married his soul mate, Shannon Wycoff, on August 7, 2004.

Mason and Mackenzie Meert; their parents; brothers Brian and Kevin; nieces and nephews Brennen, Bree, Leeah, Sam, Bailey, and Emma; in-laws Suzann (Bruce) Breuker and James Wycoff; and sister-in-law Jessica (Dan) Gauthier; all survive him.

His niece Connor and nephew Dustan both predeceased him. Funeral services for Ryan will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at the Radiant Church in Richland. The family will have visitors on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, from 6-8 PM.

Plainwell’s Hillside Cemetery will be the location of the burial. Donations in Ryan’s memory can be donated to a scholarship fund for his kids; checks can be made out to either Shannon Meert or DC Strong.
