The Early Years
De La Hoya was born in East Los Angeles in 1973. He was the youngest of four children and his father was a boxer. De La Hoya started boxing at the age of 10 and quickly rose through the ranks. He won his first amateur fight at the age of 11 and by the time he was 16, he was the youngest boxer to ever win the U.S. National Golden Gloves championship.
Turning Pro
De La Hoya turned professional in 1992 and quickly became one of the most popular boxers in the world. He won his first 18 professional fights, including a victory over the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. In 1997, he won the WBC, WBA, and IBF welterweight titles.
Addiction
De La Hoya’s success came at a price. He struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs throughout his career. In 2001, he checked himself into rehab for alcohol abuse. He relapsed several times and in 2012, he was arrested for drunk driving.
Coming Out
In 2018, De La Hoya came out as gay. He said that he had been struggling with his sexuality for many years and that he finally felt comfortable enough to be open about it.
