Karen Steele was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on March 20, 1931. Her parents were a marine officer and a housewife. She learned to speak Japanese, Hawaiian, and English while growing up in the Hawaiian Islands. She hurt her leg in a surfing accident when she was 13 and had to have 22 surgeries to heal. She got through this problem and went on to study acting at the University of Hawaii and Rollins College in Florida.
She started out as a model and cover girl, and her first acting job was on the radio show Let George Do It. Her first movie role was in The Clown in 1953, but she wasn’t given any credit for it. She became well-known for her part as Virginia, a lonely woman who befriends Marty, the main character in the 1955 drama that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Karen Steele got married to Dr. Maurice Boyd Ruland, a psychiatrist at The Mohave Mental Health Clinic, in 1973. They lived in Golden Valley, Arizona, and Steele got involved in community service and charitable work there.
After she got older, she also did some commercials for TV. She passed away in Kingman, Arizona, on March 12, 1988, eight days before her 57th birthday. Her spouse lived, but he passed away in 2004. Many of Karen Steele’s fans and coworkers will always remember how talented and beautiful she was.
