Her jet crashed about a minute after departure from Marsh Harbour Airport in the Bahamas. Aaliyah and the other passengers on board were killed in the crash.

The incident was caused by an overloaded plane that weighed more than 700 pounds more than its weight limit. The pilot, who was also killed in the crash, was under the influence of cocaine and alcohol at the time of the disaster. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the pilot’s drug usage and lack of experience played a role in the tragedy.

The NTSB found Aaliyah’s death to be accidental. Her body was discovered 20 feet away from the wreckage, and she died on impact from “severe burns and a blow to the head.”
