His nephew, Lance Richards, confirmed his death in a heartfelt Facebook post, saying that he died of congestive heart failure at his home in Murray, Utah.

Golden Richards’ Football Career

Richards was born and reared in Utah, and he excelled in three sports (football, basketball, and track) at Granite High School. He attended Brigham Young University, where he led the nation in punt returns and earned All-WAC recognition in 1971. He transferred to the University of Hawaii for his senior season and caught 23 passes for 414 yards and five scores.

In the second round of the 1973 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected Richards. During his rookie season, he was the team’s fastest player and spent most of his time on special teams.

He became a starter in 1974 and quickly established himself as a deep threat, averaging more than 21 yards per reception in 1974 and 1976.

He won two Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys and is most known for grabbing a 29-yard touchdown pass from fullback Robert Newhouse during a trick play in Super Bowl XII against the Denver Broncos.

Richards played for the Chicago Bears in 1978 and 1979, then for the Denver Broncos in 1980, before retiring due to injuries.He concluded his career with 122 receptions, 2,136 yards, and 17 touchdowns.
