Roger Staubach Biography
Roger Thomas Staubach, also known as Captain America, Roger The Dodger, and many other nicknames. Roger was born on February 5, 1942, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He was the only child in the family, and he is also of German descent. Roger spent the majority of his childhood in Cincinnati with his parents. Roger has had a lifelong interest in football.
He was a member of the boys scouts and played football there when he was younger. Roger later became a very good footballer during his school years and was later admitted to the Naval Academy. He enrolled in a military academy in order to serve his country, but his color blindness made it difficult for him. Later, he began to take football seriously and developed into a fantastic player.
Professional Career
Staubach was chosen by the Dallas Cowboys in the tenth round of the 1964 NFL Draft as a “future” pick. Because Staubach had been out of high school for four years, the NFL allowed them to draught him before his college eligibility expired. He did not, however, play professional football until 1969, after completing his four-year military commitment, when he made his debut as a 27-year-old rookie.
Staubach took over as quarterback full-time in week eight of the 1971 season, after alternating with Craig Morton for a few games. He would go on to lead the Cowboys to ten consecutive victories, including the team’s first Super Bowl victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI in January 1972. After a successful season, Staubach negotiated his own contract, landing a three-year deal worth around $75,000 per year.
Staubach was forced to miss most of the 1972 season due to a separated shoulder, but he returned in a divisional playoff against the San Francisco 49ers, where he threw two touchdown passes in the final 90 seconds to win 30-28. He would remain the starting quarterback for the rest of his career, including in 1977, when he led the Cowboys to their second Super Bowl victory, defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII.
Staubach announced his retirement in 1979 and officially left football in March 1980, after 11 NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, with 1,685 completions for 22,700 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 109 interceptions. The main reason for his retirement was a doctor’s warning about his health after he suffered twenty concussions during his career, and the serious consequences if he suffered another head injury.
