Riley Gaines decided to swim for the University of Kentucky, where she studied kinesiology. She made an immediate impact as a freshman, helping the Wildcats capture their first SEC championship in 2020.
She also competed in the NCAA championships, finishing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle. She was an All-American in both events, as well as the 800-meter freestyle relay.
