While his mother was at college, Davis was reared by his paternal grandmother. Mane was introduced to rap and hip hop at a young age by his elder half-brother Victor, who took him to a concert including Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J. Mane and his mother moved to Atlanta in 1989.

Mane had been dealing drugs for two years when he was stopped on his bicycle, held a gun at his head, and robbed. He began carrying a weapon after that. Mane earned a 3.0 GPA and a scholarship at Georgia Perimeter College after graduating from high school in 1998.

He began to take music more seriously after being released from county jail, and hoped to make a career out of it. Gucci self-released his first mixtape, ‘La Flare,’ and then decided to start his own record company, which is how La Flare Entertainment was founded.
