Pat Benatar was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York City, on January 10, 1953, to beautician Mildred and sheet-metal worker Andrew Andrzejewski. Her father was Polish, and her mother was born in Germany, England, and Ireland.

Her mother, Millie, was a professional opera singer who instilled a passion for music in her at a young age. They relocated to Lindenhurst, New York, where she developed an interest in theater and began taking vocal training.

She also performed during the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. She had trained as a coloratura and had planned to attend the Juilliard School, but she changed her mind and chose to pursue health teaching at the State University of New York at Stony Brook instead.

She dropped out of college when she was 19 to marry her first husband, high school sweetheart and US Army draftee Dennis Benatar. Dennis was stationed as a soldier in Virginia, while she worked as a bank teller.
