Goldman moved to Baltimore in 2000 to work as a personal chef, but two years later he started his own business selling unusual and daring cakes from his apartment, which attracted clients and boosted the business. Charm City Cakes, a home-based business, quickly expanded into a larger space, an old church that Goldman converted into a modern bakery. As the company expanded, he hired more employees, the majority of whom were painters, architects, and sculptors who began creating extraordinary cakes.
