With Candy Crush, Minecraft, and other games coming along, Microsoft has officially announced that it will be releasing its Xbox mobile gaming store for Android and iOS platforms in July.

Microsoft’s Sarah Bond, the company’s president of Xbox, announced today at the Bloomberg Technology Summit that the company’s mobile gaming store will open in July. Although Microsoft has long discussed its intentions to develop a rival gaming shop to Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, this is the first time a specific launch date has been mentioned.

Furthermore, Bond verified that there will be no native app launch for the Xbox game shop on mobile devices.

The store will instead “start on the web.” Microsoft may now spread the shop globally across “all devices”. Though iOS is a different matter, technically, the business could open its own app store on Android anywhere in the world.

Apple only permits that in the EU, but the EU has pushed Apple to allow iOS to be accessible through third-party app stores—despite Apple’s best efforts to make it difficult and unpleasant. Thus, Microsoft may disseminate its iOS store worldwide by simply going live on the web.

Nevertheless, it’s still being determined how these games will be made available online. Sideloading is now supported on iOS as well, although only in the EU. It appears highly probable that cloud gaming could have an impact.

Bond explained, “In July, we are going to be launching our mobile store experience. We’re going to start, actually, by bringing our own first-party portfolio to that. So you’re going to see games like Candy Crush show up in that experience, games like Minecraft. And then we’re going to extend that capability to partners so that they can take advantage of it and have a true cross-platform gaming-centric mobile experience.”

“We’re going to start on the web, and we’re doing that because that really allows us to have it be an experience that’s accessible across all devices, all countries, no matter what, independent of the policies of, you know, closed ecosystem stores. And then we’re going to extend from there.”

The ultimate objective, it seems, is to provide a genuine store alternative to what Apple and Google offer, including third-party support. However, it appears that achieving this goal is still a distant prospect.
