True Detective is back on the case, as a brand new chapter in the anthology crime drama is on the way. While this is True Detective season 4, officially titled True Detective: Night Country, just about everything in the show is new, from the cast to the showrunner. However, one thing sure to remain is that at the center of it all is a haunting mystery for the characters (and viewers) to pour over.
The first season of True Detective, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, debuted in 2014 and became a big hit. True Detective season 2 followed quickly on its heels in 2015 and featured Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly. Season 3 of True Detective did not arrive until 2019, as the show was taken over by new writers and had Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, Ray Fisher and Mamie Gummer as its main cast.
Who is involved in this new season and just what is it going to be about? Here is everything that you need to know about True Detective season 4.
True Detective Season 4 Release Date
True Detective Season 4 will be released sometime in 2024. HBO took its time announcing a new season after Season 3 ended in February 2019. However, the announcement occurred in March 2022, and the fourth season began filming in November 2022.
Surprisingly, True Detective season 4 footage was included earlier this year in the HBO Max’s 2023 debut trailer. An official teaser for the series later confirmed its release date of 2023. As a result, it was assumed that it would come in November or December, given that most series take at least a year to complete production and post-production. However, HBO has subsequently moved the series’ premiere date to sometime in 2024.

True Detective Season 4 Cast
True Detective has always had huge celebrities leading each season, and Jodie Foster is one of the leads in True Detective season 4. Foster is a Hollywood classic, having appeared in films such as Taxi Driver, The Accused, The Silence of the Lambs, Contact, Inside Man, and, most recently, The Mauritanian since she was a child. Foster began her career in television, but True Detective will be her first major part since the 1970s. Foster portrays Liz Danvers, one of the major detectives on the case, in True Detective season 4.
Evangeline Navarro, the other detective, will be played by Kali Reis. Reis is a professional boxer and campaigner for Indigenous rights who made her acting debut in the 2021 indie film Catch the Fair One. Her performance in the film earned her a special Jury Mention at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival as well as a nomination for Best Female Lead at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards. It also definitely piqued the interest of the True Detective team.
Season 4 cast members include John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve), Finn Bennett (The Nevers), Anna Lambe (Three Pines), Joel D. Montgrand (Altered Carbon), and newcomers Aka Niviâna and Isabella Star Lablanc.

Other True Detective Season 4 Crew
Foster and Reis will be the major characters on screen, but there is an incredible array of talent behind the camera as well. The new season’s showrunner/writer/executive producer and director is Issa López. In her home in Mexico, López has established a reputation as a writer/director with films such as Tigers Are Not Afraid and Casi Divas.
Barry Jenkins serves as an executive producer alongside López behind the scenes. Jodie Foster and the original True Detective team of Nic Pizzolatto, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and Cary Joji Fukunaga are also executive producers.
