Hocus Pocus 2 makes kids who grew up in the ’90s feel nostalgic, but is it a good movie for kids? In the sequel, which takes place almost 30 years after the first movie, the Sanderson sisters are brought back to life by a Black Flame Candle.
Even though the movie is rated PG, it has some content that might be too mature for young viewers. For example, there is some language that some parents might find offensive, and there are many references to witchcraft.
If you’ve already seen the first movie, which has become a Halloween classic over the years, you have a pretty good idea of what you’re in for with your kids. If you haven’t seen the movie, we’ve broken down everything you need to know about it before letting your kids watch it.
The Whole Movie Is About Witchcraft
A movie about three witches from Salem would have to have some magic, right? But Hocus Pocus 2 goes even deeper into witchcraft than the first movie. Mother Witch, who gives the Sanderson sisters the book of spells, and a teenage witch named Becca are introduced in the movie. There are also a few scenes that show spells being cast. Young children might find these scenes a little scary because they have a few jumps scares and spooky parts.
There’s Some Violence
First of all, the whole movie is about how the Sanderson sisters want to get even with the descendant of a reverend who hurt them when they were kids. In an earlier scene, the young Sanderson sisters use a spell to set fire to the reverend’s house, which they enjoy.
In another scene later in the movie, Winnie uses her powers to throw a man across the woods, attack a young girl, and cut the neck of a third person for her blood. Winnie also slaps her sisters in the face. It’s so hard that Kathy Najimy used it as an excuse for why her crooked smile switched sides from the first movie!
Some Parts Could Be Scary For Young Children
Aside from the scary magic scenes, there are other parts of the movie that could scare young children. For example, Billy is shown coming out of his grave, and at one point, his head is pulled off. In another scene, the whole town is put under a spell, and as they wander around aimlessly, they do what the Sanderson sisters want.
There Are Some Harsh Words In It
There is a small amount of bad language in the movie, such as “damn,” “OMG,” and “hag.” There are also a few references to the devil, such as “Satan’s work,” “Holy Lucifer,” and “Devil’s book.”
There Are Some Sexual Themes Throughout
Given that the Sanderson sisters can only return if a virgin ignites the Black Flame Candle, the film contains sexual undertones. In one particular incident, a character makes an implied sexual connection by stating that he was unable to light the candle alone because it “wouldn’t work.”
Throughout the video, the word “virgin” is also mentioned, with one child wondering, “What is a virgin?” —to which another character responds that it is an individual who has not lit a candle.
