In Greensboro, North Carolina, Hooker attended James B. Dudley High School. During his High School Career, he passed for 6,027 yards and 55 touchdowns and rushed for 2,975 yards and 48 touchdowns. He finished his career at Dudley as the all-time leader in passing as a two-time All-state player and NC Preps’ All-state Player of the Year.
The 2016 Championship MVP award was given to Hooker after he led his team to two state titles with six touchdowns. Additionally, he was named to the high school’s All-Metro Conference team three times. When Hooker graduated high school, he received offers from Oregon, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Army, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Missouri, Notre Dame, and others. When Hooker visited Virginia Tech’s campus in 2016, he said,
“When we stepped onto the big stage, it just felt right.” In January, Hooker began classes at the school. Redshirt freshman Josh Jackson competed with him for the starting quarterback position in 2017, but he ended up redshirting before the 2018 season began.
As their current quarterback, Ryan Willis threw seven turnovers in four games in 2019. Hooker took over after Willis. After starting out with two wins and two losses, the Hokies won five games under Hendon, qualifying them for a bowl game.
