Zion Williamson, a forward for the New Orleans Pelicans, will be out for several weeks because of a hamstring strain.
On Monday, the Pelicans told everyone about the injury. In three weeks, he will be looked at again.
Williamson hurt himself against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. After taking the ball up the court, he stopped and grabbed his right leg. He left and didn’t come back. On Tuesday, an MRI showed that the injury was very bad.
The often-injured Pelicans star had been relatively healthy so far this season, helping New Orleans get off to a 23-14 start that put them one game behind the first-place Denver Nuggets in the West heading into Tuesday’s NBA slate.
The Pelicans and Williamson are both hurt by the news of his injury. Williamson has never played in more than 61 games in a single NBA season.
Williamson could only play 24 games as a rookie in 2019-20 because he tore his meniscus. He didn’t play at all last season because he broke his foot, and it took him longer than expected to get better.
He was healthy and in shape when training camp started this season, and he played in 29 of the Pelicans’ first 37 games. As the Pelicans have become a contender in the Western Conference, he has averaged 26 points, 7 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.1 steals while shooting 60.8% from the floor.
The Pelicans are also missing all-star forward Brandon Ingram, who has been out for 18 games with a toe injury. On Tuesday, Ingram’s head coach, Willie Green, told reporters that Ingram is “building up” to come back, but he didn’t say when. The Pelicans are 12-6 since Ingram was taken off the field.
While their stars are out, the Pelicans will rely more on C.J. McCollum and Jonas Valanciunas to carry the offensive load.
