The typically sunny days of Sesame Street are under a cloud.
In line with HBO Max’s continuous, extensive, and ostensibly ruthless purge of numerous library tiles, all as part of WarnerBros. Nearly 200 Sesame Street programmes have been removed from the streamer as part of Discovery’s ambitious aim to pay down $3 billion (with a B) in debt.
HBO Max can avoid having to pay licencing costs for some programmes and films by eliminating them from its library. Even when these checks are paid out to sibling business Warner Bros. Television, as was the case with many of this week’s prior subtractions, it is a bottom line-boosting measure for the streamer.
The deletion of “an undetermined collection of Sesame Street episodes” was first covered by NPR, but Variety followed up with more information.
Approximately 650 Sesame Street episodes, including those from Seasons 2 through 4, were previously available on HBO Max, according to Variety. However, only 456 episodes, including “a selection” from Seasons 1, 5, and 7, were still available as of Friday morning (and the entirety of Seasons 39 through 52).

A number of HBO original shows were also deleted from HBO Max earlier this month, including Camping, Mrs. Fletcher, Here and Now, Run, and Vinyl. The Witches, Superintelligence, and Moonshot were among the films that the streamer removed from its library after they made their debuts on the platform.
