Tekken: Bloodline, Netflix’s anime version of Namco’s popular fighting game series, will start airing on August 18.
A new trailer collects where the first teaser left off. It shows the main character, Jin Kazama, training with his cruel grandfather, Heihachi Mishima, and entering the King of Iron Fist Tournament to get revenge on the mighty Ogre for killing his mother, Jun Kazama.
In addition to the characters Paul, King, and Kazuya who have already been introduced, the teaser gives us our first look at the following new Iron Fist cast members: Leroy Smith, Julia Chang, the assassin Nina Williams, Ling Xiaoyu, and Hwoarang, who is Jin’s adversary (looking fresh-faced in a very old-school outfit).
Heihachi narrates an ominous line over the montage of footage: “Kazama. Think about how powerless you felt when Ogre killed your mother. To beat him, you need to get rid of your Kazama pacifism and fuel your Mishima fire. I’m going to break you completely, and then I’ll put you back together again. Your body will be used against you. The only way is the Mishima way.”
The story seems to be based heavily, if not exactly, on what happened in Tekken 3 in 1997. (Leroy, for example, doesn’t show up until much later.) It’s a wise decision because Jin is a typical tragic hero, tormented by his heroic mother and his monstrous father Kazuya, and has compelling reasons that may be easily tainted by the well-known villain Heihachi. It’s about as solid as a framework can get for what will undoubtedly be a lot of fight scenes.
In a recent advertisement for the anime, Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada said that the games have the “lengthiest storyline” of all video games. In other words, Netflix has a lot to work with, and so far, the creators of the show, who remain anonymous, seem to be making all the right decisions.
