In 2010, the United Kingdom was rocked by the tragic story of Raoul Moat, a former nightclub bouncer who went on a killing spree in Northumberland, England. One of the central figures in this story was Samantha Stobbart, Moat’s ex-girlfriend, who was shot and injured by Moat in his rampage. Stobbart’s relationship with Moat and her subsequent involvement in the case brought her into the public eye and made her a household name in the UK. In this article, we will take a closer look at who is Samantha Stobbart and what happend to her after The Shooting?
Who is Samantha Stobbart?
Samantha Stobbart, formerly in a six-year relationship with Raoul Moat, was one of the victims of Moat’s violent shooting spree in 2010. Moat shot Stobbart through a window of her friend’s house immediately after brutally killing her partner, Chris Brown, in Birtley, Gateshead, on July 3. Stobbart survived the attack, but sadly, Brown lost his life in the incident, and police officer David Rathband was blinded and later tragically took his own life. Notably, Stobbart and Moat had a four-year-old daughter together prior to the attack.
Samantha Stobbart’s sister has reported that she has experienced social media harassment in the aftermath of the shooting incident. Stobbart herself has also received significant media attention, particularly following the airing of ITV’s true crime series, The Hunt for Raoul Moat. The series provided a detailed account of the extensive manhunt to bring Moat to justice, shedding light on the human tragedies that occurred as a result of his violent actions and offering perspectives from those involved in the pursuit.
What Happened To Samantha Stobbart After The Shooting?
Samantha Stobbart was swiftly taken to the hospital and underwent surgical procedures for the injuries she sustained from Raoul Moat’s attack. Unfortunately, her partner Chris Brown, who was also shot, did not survive. Following the tragic events, Stobbart was subjected to online harassment and various dramatizations of the incident. Along with Stobbart and Brown, Moat also shot and inflicted permanent blindness on police officer David Rathband, who ultimately took his own life. Stobbart had a young daughter with Moat, who was previously incarcerated for assault.
How Many People Did Raoul Moat Kill?
In July 2010, Raoul Moat committed a heinous act, killing two individuals and severely injuring another. Moat had a troubling history of exerting control in his relationships and harbored resentment towards law enforcement. The incident began when Moat arrived at the home of his ex-girlfriend’s friend armed with a shotgun, where he proceeded to fatally shoot her new boyfriend, Chris Brown.
In the same attack, he injured his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Stobbart. Afterward, Moat fled and remained at large for less than 24 hours before shooting and seriously wounding PC David Rathband, who was in his patrol car. Notably, Moat targeted Rathband solely because he was a police officer. Nearly 18 months after the shooting, Rathband was discovered dead by suicide. Despite evading capture for a week, Moat was eventually found and took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Where is Raoul Moat Now?
Raoul Moat, a wanted criminal, was the subject of an extensive manhunt involving 160 officers. Eventually, his car was discovered in Rothbury, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain indoors while they closed in on Moat. After locating him near the River Coquet, negotiations with Moat continued for six hours. However, despite the efforts made, Moat ultimately shot himself on July 10, 2010.
In a 49-page confession, Moat admitted to altering cartridges intended for Samantha, his ex-girlfriend, with the intention of allowing her to survive but leaving permanent scars as a reminder. Following an inquest in 2011, it was concluded that Moat’s death was a suicide and that Northumbria Police were not at fault.
