A bold new painting of President Donald Trump in the moments following a near-fatal assassination attempt has taken center stage in the White House, replacing the portrait of former President Barack Obama in a prominent East Wing location.
The dramatic artwork, inspired by a widely circulated photograph taken by New York Times photojournalist Doug Mills during Trump’s July 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, captures the former president moments after being grazed by a bullet. The scene shows Trump with a bloodied face and a determined expression, raising a clenched fist while Secret Service agents rush to shield him. The American flag billows in the background, emphasizing the painting’s patriotic tone.
Painted by artist Marc Lipp, the powerful image was gifted to the White House by Andrew Pollack, a noted school safety activist and author. Pollack’s daughter, Meadow, was one of the victims of the tragic 2018 Parkland school shooting in Florida.

According to a White House official, the piece now hangs in the Grand Foyer of the East Wing. Despite being moved, the official portrait of Barack Obama by Robert McCurdy remains on public view. White House spokesperson Harrison Fields confirmed that Obama’s likeness now resides in the Entrance Hall of the State Floor, positioned across the hallway and still occupying a prominent space above President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s historic Steinway piano.
The reshuffling of artwork reflects Trump’s ongoing personalization of the White House since returning to office in January. The president has overseen numerous decorative changes, including the addition of gold accents reminiscent of his Mar-a-Lago residence, adorning everything from fireplaces to furnishings in the Oval Office.
Trump has also filled West Wing corridors with framed front pages from The New York Post, highlighting key moments from his political resurgence and presidential comeback.
The installation of the new painting has generated significant attention online, with social media images showcasing the vivid scene and prompting a wave of reactions from both supporters and critics.
