The Trump administration has formally requested that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, according to sources within the Department of Justice (DOJ) who spoke with Fox News.
The move comes after Harvard’s handling of antisemitic incidents on campus has been criticized, with some claiming the university has failed to address the issue adequately. These allegations have now been cited as a potential reason for Harvard losing its 501(c)(3) status, Fox News reported.
CNN was the first to report that the IRS is expected to decide soon on whether to uphold or revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status.
In a recent social media post, former President Donald Trump expressed his disapproval of the university, accusing it of losing its direction. Trump claimed that Harvard has become increasingly dominated by what he called “woke” and “radical” influences, arguing that these faculty members are teaching “failure” to students.

“Harvard is hiring almost exclusively radical leftists who are only capable of teaching failure,” Trump wrote. “Take a look at their plagiarizing president, who embarrassed Harvard before Congress—Harvard no longer deserves federal funding.”
Trump’s statements continued, denouncing the university’s direction and suggesting that it no longer meets the standard of a prestigious institution of higher learning. He described Harvard as a “joke” and accused it of fostering hate and ignorance, urging that it be removed from any list of the world’s top universities.
This call for action follows a series of moves by the Justice Department, which recently launched an extensive review of federal contracts and grants tied to Harvard. The Department of Education’s review encompasses more than $255 million in federal contracts and nearly $9 billion in grants linked to the university and its affiliates.
In response to the growing concern over antisemitism on college campuses, the Department of Education has placed increased scrutiny on Ivy League schools like Harvard and Columbia University. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Harvard’s failure to protect students from antisemitic discrimination, while promoting divisive ideologies, has placed its long-held reputation in jeopardy.”
