Since the fire, the Portland Fire Investigations Unit, a partnership between the Portland Police Bureau and Portland Fire & Rescue, has been looking into how the fire started. They do this by collecting and studying evidence and talking to witnesses.
On the evening of Thursday, May 25, 2023, Portland police and the Fire Investigation Unit arrested 30-year-old Garrett A. Repp, who lived in the May Apartments.
Repp was taken to the Multnomah County Detention Center and charged with two counts of first-degree arson, 18 counts of recklessly endangering another person, and 11 counts of first-degree criminal mischief.
The Portland Fire Investigations Unit is made up of sworn police officers who work for Portland Fire & Rescue and an agent from the Portland Police Bureau.
The collaboration uses the specialized training and skills that are needed to look into fires, such as analysis tools and dogs that can sniff out accelerants.
