ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Authorities are investigating a suspected arson attack after a fire broke out early Sunday morning at the Republican Party of New Mexico’s headquarters in Albuquerque. The blaze, which started just before 6 a.m., was quickly extinguished by firefighters, but not before causing damage to the building’s entrance.
In addition to the fire, the headquarters was vandalized with graffiti criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The phrase “ICE = KKK” was spray-painted in red on the side of the building, leading some Republican officials to believe the attack was politically motivated.
“We are grateful that no one was hurt, but this type of violent act must be taken seriously,” said Amy Barela, Chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico. “Those who commit these crimes to intimidate and divide must be held accountable.”
Investigation and Political Reactions
Fire crews managed to contain the fire within minutes, preventing it from spreading beyond the entryway. At the time of the incident, several Trump 2024 posters were displayed in the building’s front window and inside.
The Democratic Party of New Mexico swiftly condemned the act of vandalism, though it did not directly address the fire itself.

“Political violence and vandalism are never acceptable,” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a statement. “I am relieved that no one was injured, and I trust that state and federal investigators will conduct a thorough inquiry.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is expected to assist in the investigation alongside the State Police and Fire Marshal’s Office.
Ongoing Security Concerns
This incident is not the first time the New Mexico Republican headquarters has been targeted. The office has faced previous acts of vandalism, as well as a bomb threat in recent years.
The attack also comes amid a broader wave of property damage linked to political tensions. In recent weeks, Tesla dealerships have been hit by vandalism and arson, with some incidents reportedly involving Molotov cocktails. These attacks appear to be connected to grievances against both the Trump administration and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the GOP headquarters fire to come forward as the investigation continues .
