Flaherty was born July 27, 1942, in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He graduated from Pontotoc High School and went to the University of Southern Mississippi. He served in the United States Army in the 1970s before studying acting and playwriting at Mississippi State University and Southern Methodist University.
He relocated to New York City and made his Broadway debut in a rendition of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. He also authored several plays, including A-Birthing at Nubbin Ridge and Showdown at the Adobe Model, which were performed at famous theaters such as the Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Steppenwolf Theatre.

Flaherty was recognized for playing a wide range of characters, frequently portraying rural or eccentric characteristics. He played memorable roles in movies like Winter People, Miller’s Crossing, Blood In Blood Out, Tom and Huck, A Simple Wish, Home Fries, Double Parked, Maze, and Cold in July.
