Erika S. Mushorn, a Troy resident, left an unforgettable mark on her community and family before passing away at the age of 31. She unfortunately died of a heart attack at Samaritan Hospital on December 27, 2023.

In this article, we honor Erika as a magnificent mother, wife, daughter, and friend who, despite her short life, embraced it with love, dedication, and a vibrant personality.

Who was Erika Mushorn?

Erika was an important member of the Mushorn family in Albany. Erika Mushorn, born on March 15, 1992, to Wade C. and Wendy L. Mushorn, grew up with her siblings Teresa (Christopher) Phillips and April (George) Mushorn.

Her grandmother, Joan Mushorn, and her extended family, including Scott Mushorn, were overjoyed. Erika’s cousins, Justin S. Mushorn and Susan E. (Bob) Clarke, and countless nieces and nephews valued her presence, making her an indispensable component of both families.

Erika S. Mushorn, 31, of Troy, died on December 27th at Samaritan Hospital following a cardiac attack. Erika was born in Albany, New York. Her father, Wade C. Mushorn, grandmother, Joan Mushorn, and uncle, Scott Mushorn, died before her.

Erika was a homeworker; earlier, she worked at Walmart for several years as a customs service manager and later at Hewett’s Garden Center, both in Halfmoon. Her husband, Derek R. Matala, and her five children, Derek R. Matala Jr., Nathan J. Matala, Dominick A. Matala, Nina E. Matala, and Grace L. Matala, survived her.

Her mother, Wendy L. Mushorn, and two sisters, Teresa L. (Christopher) Phillips and April M. (George) Mushorn, survived her. Harry and Tammy Matala, her mother and father-in-law. Her cousin Justin S. Mushorn, aunt Susan E. (Bob) Clarke, and other nieces and nephews survive her.

On Friday, January 5th, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm, there will be calling hours at the Catricala Funeral Home, 1597 Route 9, in Clifton Park. Instead of flowers, the family begs that donations be made to the Mushorn family to aid with burial expenses and to assist her children.

Erika is survived by her spouse, Derek Matala as well as her five children, Nathan J. Matala, Nina E. Matala, Grace L. Matala, Derek R. Matala Jr., and Dominick A. Matala. Erika worked at Hewitt’s Garden Centers in Clifton Park, New York, according to her Facebook profile.

The 31-year-old formerly worked at Walmart as a customs service manager and then as the Zone Merchandise Supervisor Front End Manager. Erika graduated from Shenendehowa High School. She also had two sisters, April and Teresa, as well as her mother, Wendy L. Mushorn.

Erika’s untimely death grieves her family and friends. Several of them resorted to Facebook to express their sorrow and grief over Erika.

Another of Erika’s friends, Dolnesha Figueroa remembered her as “real and genuine.”.
