Early Life and Musical Influences
Teddy Swims was born on September 25, 1992, in Conyers, Georgia, as Jaten Collin Dimsdale. His father exposed him to soul music at a young age by playing Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Al Green. Teddy grew up listening to country music as well as rock bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin.
Teddy received his nickname from his football teammates, who referred to him as “teddy bear” because of his small stature and soft demeanor. He played football for ten years, but he discovered his love of performing in musicals and Shakespeare plays during his high school theater experience.
To strengthen his vocal skills, he learned to play the piano and ukulele and watched YouTube recordings of vocalists. He has played in various bands in the Atlanta region, including alternative rock, post-hardcore, soul, and hair metal.
YouTube Breakthrough and Record Deal
Teddy Swims launched his YouTube channel in June 2019, with the release of his first cover of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You.” He continues to share interpretations of songs by Lewis Capaldi, Chris Stapleton, Amy Winehouse, and H.E.R., demonstrating his diverse and powerful voice. His cover of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” is his most popular video, garnering 86 million views as of 2022.
Teddy also independently released his first original track, “Night Off,” in July 2019. He earned more recognition when his friend and producer Addy Maxwell allowed him to rap on some of his tracks, which led to an opening position on Tyler Carter’s U.S. tour.
Teddy chose his stage name by combining his moniker and the acronym SWIMS, which stands for “someone who isn’t me sometimes,” alluding to the idea of blending many aspects of his personality. He went on to say, “I think we all have different versions of ourselves that we put on for different situations, and I wanted to embrace that and show that I can do anything.”
Teddy secured a record deal with Warner Records in December 2019, joining Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and Dua Lipa. In January 2020, he released his first major label single, “Picky,” followed by “Broke” in October 2020. He has also worked with musicians such as Thomas Rhett, Kane Brown, and Nelly.
Debut EP, Mixtape, and Album
Teddy published his debut EP, “Unlearning,” in May 2021, which included six tracks, including “My Bad” and “Bed on Fire.” He defined the EP as “a collection of life stories that have shaped who I am today.”
Teddy published his first mixtape, “Tough Love,” in January 2022, which comprised ten songs, including “Dose” and “Lose Somebody.” The mixtape, he explained, was “a reflection of the ups and downs of love and relationships.”
Teddy published his first album, “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1),” in October 2022, which included 12 tracks, including “Rivers” and “Don’t Wanna Be Alone.” The record, he claimed, was “a journey of self-discovery and healing.”
