Susan Abigail Tomalin was born on October 4, 1946, in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, USA. Her father, Philip Tomalin, is of English, Irish, and Welsh ancestry, and her mother, Lenora Marie, is of Italian ancestry. She was raised in New Jersey with her eight siblings, four brothers and four sisters. Her father was a television producer as well as an advertising executive.

Susan attended Edison as a child. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in drama from the Catholic University of America. She studied under the great theater instructor and coach, Father Gilbert Hartke, at Catholic University.

After graduating, she made her cinematic début in 1969 as the title character in the film Joe. She made her television debut the following year, appearing in the soap operas In Search of Tomorrow and A World Apart from 1970 until 1972.
