Suge Knight Legal Issues and Bankruptcy
A slew of legal issues resulting from Suge Knight’s aggressive and illegal actions hindered his career. He was arrested on multiple occasions for assault, drug possession, parole violation, theft, and other offenses.
He was also a part of the famed East Coast-West Coast dispute that led to the deaths of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. in drive-by shootings in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Knight was suspected in both deaths, but he was never charged.
Knight’s legal problems had an impact on his commercial empire. He received a nine-year prison sentence in 1996 for violating his probation after being captured on video attacking a rival at a Las Vegas hotel. He was released in 2001 after serving five years.
Death Row Records’ reputation and sales dropped during his incarceration, as many of its performers left or died. In addition, the label faced multiple lawsuits from former associates and creditors who claimed Knight owed them money or rights.
Knight declared bankruptcy in 2006 after losing a $107 million civil lawsuit from Lydia Harris, who claimed to be a co-founder of Death Row Records and that Knight had defrauded her of her share.
