Narayana Murthy was born on August 20, 1946, in Shidlaghatta, Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka, to a middle-class Brahmin family.

Murthy has two children: a son, Rohan Murty, and a daughter, Akshata Murty.

He is Rishi Sunak’s father-in-law, the new Chancellor of the Exchequer, and a British MP.

Narayana Murthy Career

Narayana Murthy began his career at IIM Ahmedabad as a Research Assistant for a faculty member before becoming the chief systems programmer.

He created and launched India’s first time-sharing computer system while working for Electronics Corporation of India Limited.

Softronics is the name he gave to his company. He joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune after the company went bankrupt after about a year and a half.

Murthy and his six tech professionals founded Infosys in 1981, with a Rs 10,000 seed investment from his wife Sudha Murthy.

Before joining Infosys, he worked as a chief systems programmer at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and Patni Computer Systems in Pune (Maharashtra).

Murthy served as CEO of Infosys for 21 years, from 1981 to 2002, before being succeeded by co-founder Nandan Nilekani. He was the board’s chairman from 2002 to 2006, during which time he also became the Principal Mentor.

In August 2011, he left the organization and was given the title of Chairman Emeritus. Murthy serves as an independent director on the corporate board of HSBC and has previously served on the boards of DBS Bank, Unilever, NDTV, and ICICI Bank.

He serves on the Asia Pacific Advisory Board for British Telecommunications. In 2005, he co-chaired the World Economic Forum in Davos.

On June 1, 2013, Murthy returned to Infosys as Executive Chairman and Additional Director. Murthy announced on June 12, 2014, that he would step down as Executive Chairman on June 14, 2014. He is currently the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Public Health Foundation of India.

He will continue to serve as Non-Executive Chairman until October 10th. Murthy was to be named Chairman Emeritus on October 11th. Rohan started working at Infosys as his father’s executive assistant in June 2013. In June 2014, he left Infosys.
