Aniello went on to work on more comedic productions for television and film. In 2016, she co-created and directed the miniseries Time Traveling Bong, starring Glazer and Downs as cousins who use a bong to travel across history.
Rough Night, a comedy about a bachelorette party gone wrong starring Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, and Glazer, was her feature film debut in 2017. She was the first woman in over 20 years to direct an R-rated comedy.
In 2019, she directed and executive produced Russian Doll, a Netflix series starring Natasha Lyonne as a woman who is constantly dying and repeating the same day. The show was a big success, garnering critical acclaim as well as several Emmy nominations.
She directed and executive produced the Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, starring Awkwafina as a young lady attempting to find her path in life, in 2020. She also executive produced the Netflix series The Baby-Sitters Club, based on Ann M. Martin’s best-selling books.
She co-created and directed the HBO Max series Hacks in 2021, starring Jean Smart as a veteran comedian who employs a young writer, Hannah Einbinder, to help her resurrect her career. The program was a huge success, garnering wonderful reviews and many Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Smart, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Aniello.
