Born in Passaic, New Jersey in 1939, Dick Vitale was reared in Garfield. John, his father, was a clothing press operator and security officer, whereas Mae, his mother, was a factory seamstress.
Vitale attended East Rutherford High School as an adolescent and then Seton Hall University for college, where he earned a bachelor of science in business administration. Later, he graduated from William Paterson University with a master’s in education.
In 1958, Vitale began his coaching career at an elementary school in Garfield, New Jersey. He ultimately moved up to the high school level and spent one season as the head coach at Garfield High School.
Later, he coached at East Rutherford High School, his alma mater, and ultimately led his teams to two New Jersey state championships. From 1964 to 1971, he had a 131-47 record at the institution.
College and NBA Coaching
