Colin Kaepernick was born on November 3, 1987, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Heidi Russo, a 19-year-old white American woman. His biological father, a black American with Ghanaian, Nigerian, and Ivorian ancestry, divorced Russo before Kaepernick was born, and his identity remains unknown.

Rick and Teresa Kaepernick, a Caucasian couple who had lost two kids to heart problems when he was five weeks old, adopted him. He has an adoptive brother, Kyle, and a sister, Devon. He was raised in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, until age four, when his family relocated to Turlock, California.

He went to John H. Pitman High School and played football, basketball, and baseball. He obtained a football scholarship at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he majored in business management.

He was a standout quarterback for the Nevada Wolf Pack, being the only athlete in NCAA Division I history to have a career total of 10,000 throwing yards and 4,000 rushing yards. In 2008 and 2010, he was named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Offensive Player of the Year.

Colin Kaepernick’s Career

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Colin Kaepernick 36th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft’s second round. After Alex Smith’s concussion in mid-2012, he became the 49ers’ starting. He led the squad to its first Super Bowl berth since 1994, losing 34-31 to the Ravens.

He set an NFL record with 181 rushing yards against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Playoff. Kaepernick helped the 49ers reach the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the Seattle Seahawks 23-17 in his first full season as a starter in 2013.

He extended his 49ers contract for six years in 2014 for up to $126 million, with $61 million guaranteed. Injuries, inconsistency, and coaching changes plagued Kaepernick and the 49ers for three seasons, missing the playoffs.

In 2016, he began sitting and later kneeling during the national anthem before NFL games, becoming a vocal leader against racial injustice and police brutality. He said he was protesting to express respect for the disadvantaged and underprivileged in the country and to refuse to fly a flag that reflects what oppresses them.

His protest created a national debate and movement, with some supporting him and his cause and others opposing it. The NFL, media, and public all criticized him, including President Donald Trump, who called for his and other demonstrators’ firing.

Despite being one of the top quarterbacks, Kaepernick hasn’t signed with an NFL team since 2016. His 2017 grievance accused the NFL of collaborating to keep him out for his advocacy. In 2019, the terms of the settlement were unknown.

In 2019, he worked out for NFL scouts and said he was ready to play. He also worked in media and entertainment. He became Nike’s “Just Do It” face in 2018, earning millions from the promotion. In 2020, Netflix engaged him to produce and appear in Colin in Black and White, a biographical miniseries. He also founded Ra Vision Media, a production firm that empowers people of color.
