Claudine Gay was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 26, 1969, to Haitian immigrants who met as students in New York City. She earned a bachelor’s degree in politics from Princeton University in 1992.

In 1995 and 1998, she received her master’s degree and Ph.D. in government from Harvard University. In the year 2000, she began her academic career as an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University. In 2006, she was appointed as an associate professor with tenure.
In 2006, she became a professor of government and African and African American studies at Harvard University. In 2015, she was named the Wilbur A. Cowett Professor of Government. She also served as the dean of social science at Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) from 2015 to 2018 and as the Edgerley Family Dean of FAS from 2018 to 2023.
She was in charge of the academic and financial affairs of Harvard’s largest and most diversified faculty, which included the College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Division of Continuing Education. She was named Harvard University’s 30th president in 2023, succeeding Lawrence Bacow.
She is Harvard’s first black president and the university’s second female president. She is the university’s principal academic and administrative officer, as well as the ex officio chair of the Harvard Corporation, the university’s governing board.
