Bernard Jean Étienne Arnault was born in Roubaix, France, on March 5, 1949. Jean Léon Arnault, his father, was a manufacturer and a graduate of École Centrale Paris. His mother, Marie-Josèphe Savinel, was the daughter of civil engineering firm Ferret-Savinel owner Étienne Savinel.
