You’ll have to fight to stay alive in The Callisto Protocol. You’ll have to face the mysteries hiding in the shadows on Jupiter’s dead moon and the horrors inside the Black Iron Prison.
The Callisto Protocol is a horrifying third-person survival horror game with levels of dismemberment that will make your stomach turn, cool sci-fi settings, and weapons that are out of this world.
We talked to the creators at Striking Distance and read all the news about The Callisto Protocol before it comes out in December, so keep reading to find out everything you need to know about it.
The Callisto Protocol: Release Date Details
The Callisto Protocol will come out on December 2, 2022. This date is set in stone. That was confirmed over the summer when developer Striking Distance Studios showed up at Sony’s State of Play event in June with a new trailer. It was the first look at The Callisto Protocol’s gameplay after three years of hints from creative director Glen Schofield.
Striking Distance also said that The Callisto Protocol will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One. The studio hasn’t ruled out a The Callisto Protocol Game Pass release, and Schofield says he has talked about the idea with Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. However, he wants to “give the game time on the market” before committing to any subscription services.
The Callisto Protocol: Trailer
Over the past two years, many trailers have come out, from the first Red Band trailer for The Callisto Protocol to the most recent story trailer that takes us inside the Black Iron Prison.
Above, you can watch the longer The Callisto Protocol gameplay trailer from Summer Game Fest. This should give you a good idea of how the game works and how it pays careful homage to Dead Space, the game that inspired it the most.
The Callisto Protocol Gameplay Details
The Callisto Protocol is a survival horror game played from the third-person perspective. It was made for a new generation of gamers. It’s basically a love letter to Visceral Games’ Dead Space (2008) and Dead Space 2 (2011), but the creator Glen Schofield has put a decade’s worth of thought and change into it. If you haven’t played either of the best horror games for the Xbox 360, you should know that you’re in for a hellishly scary time.
The Callisto Protocol works hard to create a sense of foreboding tension through its dense, dark, and atmospheric levels. It does this by mixing exploration with quick bursts of gruesome combat against strange enemies.
The only way to stay alive is to cut off and shoot off limbs, use a gravity gun to pull enemies into dangerous parts of the environment or use heavy melee combat to beat the flesh of enemies into mulch. The Callisto Protocol isn’t for people who are easily scared, just like Dead Space.
Glen Schofield told GamesRadar+ that there are natural similarities between Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol, but that Striking Distance has tried to give its new-generation survival horror game more depth than just the usual killing and tearing apart. “The combat in our game is different, right? You can choose what to do, there are melee and stealth options, and you can improve your weapons through skill trees.”
“Then there’s the GRP, which is an upgraded Gravity Gun that lets you pick up enemies. This adds sandbox elements since you can now pick up things all over the world. You can use enemies as meat shields, throw them into fans, or into another enemy,” says Schofield. “Through all of this, you can choose the path you want to take.”
Does Pubg Have Anything To Do With The Callisto Protocol?
The Callisto Protocol used to be a part of PUBG. At least, that’s what the world was told back in 2019. During development, however, something changed, and The Callisto Protocol became its own IP that “no longer takes place in the PUBG universe.” This has caused some confusion, so we went straight to Glen Schofield with the question.
The CEO of Striking Distance told us that as development went on, the studio decided that “saying it’s attached is a lie” and went straight to Changhan Kim, the CEO of publisher Krafton, with the problem. And he told Schofield what he wanted to hear: “Okay, let it go.”
How long Is The Callisto Protocol?
The Callisto Protocol knows how important it is to not stay too long. Glen Schofield told Edge Magazine, a sister publication of GamesRadar+, in issue #377 that the core story of The Callisto Protocol will take “around 12 to 14 hours” to finish.
Schofield says that there are “beta paths” through the game for people who want to see more of the Black Iron Prison and the horrors it holds. This will not only make the game more fun to play again, but it will also “encourage conversations between players who took different routes to finish.”
Will There Be Online Play In The Callisto Protocol?
The Callisto Protocol is a single-player, story-driven survival horror game, according to Striking Distance Studios. On December 17, 2021, Glen Schofield gave a firm answer to a question about whether The Callisto Protocol would have co-op: “This is a story we wanted to tell, and the best way to tell it was as a single-player game. Sometimes, when you play co-op, you go in different directions and don’t follow the story as well. And not only that, we wanted you to be alone. That’s what makes this really scary.”
The Callisto Protocol is one of the best PS5 and Xbox Series X games coming out in 2022. Go back and play one of the best survival horror games while you wait for it to come out.
