Cod Gyros: See how to Prepare Seafood with Recipes Inspired by Culinary of Mediterranean Sea

When the sun’s out and you’re feeling good, there’s nothing like eating great food. If you’re hoping to find a fresh, Mediterranean dish to keep the vibes going, look no further than cod gyros, a Greek staple in the hot summer months that ticks all the right boxes for fast, healthy, comfort food that’ll keep you coming back for more.

Pan Grilled Cod

Did we mention that this recipe is quick to make? You’ll be enjoying flaky, succulent cod in around 6 minutes! You can find beautiful pieces of cod and all the other necessary ingredients for this dish at Aldi, and while your shop will generally be affordable as is, you may be lucky enough to save even more money by shopping the Aldi weekly ad and discounts.

Spice Rub

  • 1 ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • Greek extra virgin olive oil
  • 5 lb/ 680.4 g cod fillet
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper

Once you have all your ingredients to hand grab your skillet, give your fillets a quick spice rub (with the above recipe), and grill the fish on medium-high heat with a little olive oil. Three minutes or so on each side should suffice; you’ll know it’s ready when the outside gets a golden crust, but the inside should be fully opaque and flake easily with a fork.

How to serve your cod fillet?

Cod is one of the healthiest types of fish you can buy – and it has many worthwhile dietary benefits. You can expect high protein and low fat, with plenty of vitamins and minerals that contribute to a nutritious, balanced diet. The fact that it’s tasty just makes it even better.

Cod is versatile and you can stop right here and eat it alongside rice dishes or salads, but you’ll be missing out! Here’s everything you need to make traditional Greek gyros:

  • Warm pita bread
  • Tzatziki sauce
  • Mediterranean salad (cucumber, tomato, and onion tossed in olive oil, salt and lemon juice)
  • Pitted olives
  • Lemon wedges

If you are having guests, it’s always fun to serve everything in the traditional buffet style, so set out plates and bowls and share some good food when you’re in great company.

First, combine the spices in a small bowl for the spice rub. Pat any moisture off of the fish fillets and season well on both sides before adding the spice rub.  Set aside while you prep the other ingredients. (toast the pita, prepare the salad, and put the tzatziki sauce in a ramekin for dipping).

Add a small amount of olive oil to a non-stick skillet, gently bring it to medium-high heat, and add your fillet(s) once the oil is ready (shimmering, not smoking). Grill on each side for around 3 minutes without moving for a crispy finish.

Serve hot, add a splash of fresh lemon juice, and wrap in a warm pita before adding a spoonful of tzatziki (to taste) and your salad.

And that’s all there is to it! A fresh fish meal that is so easy to make, tastes delicious and will impress your friends and family. It really doesn’t get any simpler – and it’s also a healthy option for any night of the week, so why not run down to your local Aldi right now and get cooking?
