Ted Lasso Season 3 Update: Filming Started, Expected Release Date, Cast Change and More

Ted Lasso’s second season finale aired on Apple TV+ a few months ago, and “Ted Heads,” as the show’s ardent fans have dubbed themselves, are eagerly looking forward to season three (especially given the ending’s jaw-dropping twist and the cast’s recent SAG Award win). Here’s all we know about Ted’s next (and maybe final) chapter so far.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Renewed

Ted Lasso was extended for a third season back in 2022, not long after the show’s first season on Apple TV+ concluded its run. Since its premiere, Ted Lasso has established itself as an optimistic series and character for fans to turn to when facing difficult circumstances.

Ted Lasso Season 3 has started Filming

Apple TV has confirmed that Ted Lasso season 3 has begun production, and Nike has released a sneak peek at the AFC Richmond’s updated uniforms for the 2018 season.

Apple TV+ has confirmed that Ted Lasso season 3 has indeed begun filming, as previously reported. The comedy series aired its first season on the streaming site in 2020, during the early days of the pandemic lockdown, and soon gained popularity among consumers as a lighthearted, feel-good comedy. Ted Lasso’s season 1 and season 2 did, however, address some important issues, such as mental health, anxiety, and depression, among others. In the role of the titular American football coach who is unexpectedly hired to lead an English soccer team, AFC Richmond, Jason Sudeikis has received a slew of accolades and awards for his performance.

In addition to Sudeikis, Ted Lasso actors Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein have also received Emmy nods for their performances, with Juno Temple, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift also earning nominations. Ted Lasso season 2 finished on a major cliffhanger, and fans have been anticipating another quick turnaround from the series’ creative team, which includes Sudeikis, Goldstein, Hunt, Bill Lawrence, and Joe Kelly, to bring the show back. However, the streamer has now confirmed that season 3 has officially commenced filming, contrary to previous rumors that season 3 had already begun filming.

Season 3 of Ted Lasso is currently in the production phase, according to the Apple TV Twitter account. The tweet came in reaction to an image shared by Nike announcing a new relationship with the program for the updated jerseys of the AFC Richmond football team. Apple TV responded to the tweet with the following statement: “It’s a new season. Kits that are brand new.” Take a look at the following exchange:

It had previously been disclosed by Waddingham that Ted Lasso season 3 will begin filming in March, and now Apple TV has confirmed that everything is proceeding according to plan. Even though Mohammed had previously shared an image online in January indicating that he was on set and filming new sequences as Nathan Shelley, with the character’s now-signature grey hair, this has not been the case so far. Regardless of when the cameras begin rolling, Ted Lasso season 3 fans are almost certainly relieved to learn that production has begun, especially after reports of a postponement circulated.

Ted Lasso was initially designed with a three-season plan in mind, which means that the future episodes could mark the end of the hit program in its current form, as creator Bill Lawrence has stated could be the case. Ted Lasso was originally developed with a three-season plan in mind. Given all of this, it’s possible that Ted Lasso season 3 will serve as an emotional send-off for Sudeikis’ eternally optimistic coach and his eccentric underdog squad. With season 3 still in development, it is probable that Ted Lasso will make a return to Apple TV+ later this year.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Release Date

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show will return to Apple TV in the summer of 2022, but Apple has not officially verified this date with the publication. Additionally, according to the publication, many of the show’s stars and writers renegotiated their contracts before to the third season’s airing.

Actress Hannah Waddingham stated that production will begin on Valentine’s Day next year, which she described as “quite nice” during a recent appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Plot

Season 3 has two big stories that need to be wrapped up in a satisfying way.

The first relates to AFC Richmond’s upcoming comeback to the Premier League. Richmond is back in the big time after securing promotion on the penultimate day of last season, but it will be difficult for them to achieve an unprecedented Leicester City-level title success.

Manchester City is only one of the 19 other teams standing in their path. Richmond was demoted by the Citizens in season 1 and blasted 5-0 in the FA Cup semi-final by the Citizens in season 2. With Ted Lasso season 3 underway, we’d like to see Richmond finally get overhand on one of their most fierce rivalries.

However, Ted and his team will have to deal with more than just City in the upcoming episode’s third appearance. The revelation that Ted’s former protégé, Nate, had joined West Ham as their new manager in the season 2 finale enraged viewers. After Rupert Mannion, Rebecca’s ex-husband became the new owner of the Hammers, he was named as the team’s new manager.

In other words, we’re getting ready for a master-apprentice showdown in season 3. Actor Nick Mohammed posted a fascinating 12-point document on Twitter following season 2’s final episode revealing why Nate came to dislike Ted and chose to join West Ham. As a fascinating look at Nate’s character development over season 2, it’s well worth a look:

It would be great if one of the Ted Lasso season 3 episodes had a huge match between Richmond and West Ham, putting Ted and Nate at odds on the pitch. As much as we’re excited to see if Richmond can defeat Manchester City, we’re also looking forward to watching Ted and Nate square off in the dugout on the field of play.

Nate’s season 3 arc is about to be revealed by Mohammed. He told Collider, “I know where things are going.” Season 3 spoilers, on the other hand, are off-limits.” Season 3 is currently being written, so anything is possible. While I can think the show’s followers would cheer for a redemption storyline if the circle were closed, who knows?

Mohammed has revealed his thoughts on whether or not Nate will be redeemed in a recent interview with Collider. A spokesman for Mohammed stated, “I’m practically the villain in it now, which is a bizarre situation to find myself. The trouble with Ted Lasso is that the audience may be expecting a Nate redemption storyline, and that would be lovely to witness. If he’s not redeemed, I can see the writers saying “no, we’re going to turn it on its head” since that’s exactly what they did in season two, so he might be the one guy they don’t redeem.”

According to Mohammed in yet another interview (this time with Variety), Nate’s return to the light in season 3 may be as simple as him crying and staring at himself in the mirror. When I see him staring in the mirror, I imagine him thinking, “What the f*** am I doing?” It’s possible that he’ll realize he’s not doing the proper thing and make a U-turn.”

Additionally, Ted Lasso season 3 must close down smaller storylines. For starters, the on-and-off romance between Rebecca and Sam must be resolved for the sake of the show’s viewers. By the end of season 2, they had broken up, but we’re sure there’s more to come between them.

Roy and Keeley look to be in the midst of a relationship crisis as well. In season 2 episode 12, Keeley turned down Roy’s offer to take her on a much-needed vacation in favor of staying in the UK to focus on her new public relations agency. Because this couple hasn’t formally broken up, we expect them to reconcile, make amends, and perhaps even get married in the near future.

Ted is curious to see if his panic attacks would continue. By the end of season 2, sports psychologist Sharon had helped him deal with them, but we expect that they will persist. If Lawrence is right about Sharon’s significance, will she be able to return for additional sessions with Ted? It’s conceivable.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Ted offered Trent Crimm a position at the club, either. Nate, who divulged Ted’s panic attacks to The Independent, was Trent’s source, and he was dismissed for leaking this information in the season 2 finale. In the media field, Trent’s knowledge and experience could benefit Ted, so why not employ him? If this were to happen, it would bring together all of the show’s main characters (except for Nate), which would be a suitable way to end the series.

Many of the show’s surprises could have been predicted from the beginning, regardless of how season 3 progresses, according to Lawrence. As a result, nothing in the third season of Ted Lasso should surprise anyone.

Deadline quotes him as saying, “There will be a lot of surprises.” “However, anyone who claims that the final destination of Nate is a shocker is just plain wrong.” From the very beginning of last year, we felt like we were laying the groundwork for it. There are plenty of hints to be found. Although Jason and I are staunch non-spoiler advocates, I believe that part of the writing is already on the wall.

In Ted Lasso’s next trip we may expect to see official Premier League outfits and club logos. The Athletic reports that Apple has reached an agreement with English top-flight officials for a £500,000 ($682,000) arrangement to use uniforms, club badges, and even the Premier League trophy in season three. Is it possible that AFC Richmond will win the championship in a fairytale-style finale? If they did, it would be an incredible and moving experience.

Season 3 will begin at the beginning of the new soccer season, rather than at the end of the current season, according to Hunt in another TVLine interview.

If we do the same thing over and over again, we don’t like it. It was in January of Season 1 that the [Premier League] season began. When we started Season 2 in late September, the season was already over. Is it possible that we wish to start the season from the beginning for the first time?
