Brendan Fraser dominated the scene for a while.
The actor rose to fame as a big movie star in the late 1990s and early 2000s thanks to parts in movies like George of the Jungle, The Mummy series, Encino Man, and Crash.
But Fraser completely vanished from Hollywood in the middle of the 2000s, when his career was probably at its pinnacle.
Thanks to his acclaimed portrayal in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller The Whale, Fraser is now firmly back in the public eye. Fraser has won an Academy Award!
The actor, who recently earned his first significant award in 17 years, also received the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actor and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his portrayal. He also won the coveted Best Actor statue for his Performance.

Fraser wore a prosthetic suit that could have added up to 136 kg to portray the tormented main character. He allegedly spent up to six hours daily in the makeup chair to completely change into the role.
Fraser acknowledged in an interview with 9Honey that he frequently experienced dizziness after wearing the bulky costume.
“After the day, when all the equipment was removed, I felt slightly altered—almost dizzy. He said you’re still moving if you get off a boat and walk onto a pier.
“I felt touched playing Charlie. To inhabit that physical being, you must be extremely physically and mentally strong.
He discussed the limitations of the litigation itself in a Variety interview.
He said the torso component was almost like a straight jacket, with sleeves that attached and were hand-airbrushed to closely resemble human skin, right down to the hand-punched hair.
“I developed muscles I didn’t know I had,” he continued.
Standing ovations, an Oscar, and a lot of positive feedback
When the actor won the Oscar in 2023, he was overcome with passion.
“So this is what the multiverse looks like!” he shouted as he arrived at the microphone for his acceptance address.
“I began working in this industry 30 years ago. And nothing came naturally to me. I didn’t enjoy a facility at the time until it stopped, he said.
The Whale at the Venice Film Festival earned Fraser a memorable six-minute standing ovation, which he allegedly “sobbed” through.
Fraser delivers a “brilliant, gut-wrenching performance,” according to Vox’s movie review. The numerous positive evaluations that followed have only strengthened this.
Fraser won the Best Actor prize at the Critics’ Choice Awards in January 2023 for his work in the movie.
The actor became emotional as he entered the platform for his special moment.
He told Aronofsky from the stage, “I was in the wilderness, and I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you discovered me.
And just like the most significant directors, you directed me to the location I needed to be in.

In addition, he triumphed over Colin Farrell and Austin Butler to win the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.
After winning, Fraser spoke tearfully.
He said of his union card, “I will cherish this (award), but never more than what I used to keep in my wallet, which was my SAG card that I received in 1991.
“It gave me a sense of belonging. We all want to be a part of a community as actors, and that’s when I discovered my tribe. And I wouldn’t have believed you if you had told that person that I would be standing here now.

But he doesn’t go to every honor ceremony…
Fraser chose not to attend the yearly Golden Globes ceremony with Hollywood’s A-listers in the first week of January of this year.
He didn’t show up because of an illness or an injury but rather as an apparent snub to the event and the organization that runs it, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Fraser made it clear in the months preceding the event that he would “not participate” in the ceremony following his allegation in 2018 that former Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) President Philip Berk had molested him.
Fraser explained to GQ Magazine, “it’s because of the history that I have with them [the HFPA].”
My mother did not raise a liar, either. There are many names you can call me, but not that. I won’t take part, I promise.
What caused Brendan Fraser to quit acting
Fraser alleged that Hollywood had “blacklisted” him in 2018. In an interview with GQ, Fraser came forward and claimed that a previous head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had sexually assaulted him.
Fraser alleged that Philip Berk of the HFPA attacked him in 2003 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Fraser allegedly experienced this event, which sent him into depression.

“I’m unsure if this has caused any problems for the HFPA or the organization. However, the stillness was deafening,” remarked Fraser. In your career, the phone does cease ringing, and you begin to wonder why. Many factors exist, but was this one of them? I believe it was.
Fraser thought that the event caused him to withdraw from public life.
In the GQ article, Fraser also talked about having numerous surgeries over seven years while in and out of the hospital.
He said that playing the Mummy in the movies significantly impacted his physique and that “I was put together with tape and ice… Every day, I constructed armor for myself.
Another setback was the star’s tumultuous divorce from his ex-wife Afton Smith in 2007. When the former couple’s divorce was finally finalized in 2008, he was made to pay alimony and child support for their three children.
By 2013, Fraser had requested a reduction in his alimony because he could no longer make the US$900,000 (roughly $1.2 million) in annual payments.
Due to a lack of employment, he asked the court for a reduced payment.
